Abstract

The bis-5-(2-heteroaryl)formazanates of mercury and cadmium ML2 (where L = 5-quinoxalyl- or 5-benzothiazolylformazanate), having a pseudooctahedral structure, were studied by13C, 199Hg, and 113,111Cd NMR methods. The 199Hg and 113,111Cd NMR chemical shifts and also the spin-spin coupling constants of these nuclei with the 13C nuclei of the ligands were measured. The results of the experiments indicate π-conjugation in the metal chelate rings of the complexes, including the ring containing the atoms of the heterocycle, and also participation of the f orbitals of the mercury with various symmetry groups in the formation of a π-type MO, leading to different types of transmission of coupling through the various coordination points. The 199Hg and111,113Cd chemical shifts were also measured for the respective mercury and cadmium complexes.
